It is critical that all the relevant stakeholders in South Africa work together to empower the youth with the competence to achieve in mathematics. The purpose of this paper is to propose a more comprehensive model of the predictors of mathematics achievement that accounts for non-intellective moderators that might prevent or enable learners to achieve in mathematics in secondary school. The theoretical paper is structured according to six broader hypotheses, which address outstanding issues in the literature.
