About a year ago, I wrote the following as an intro to an article called 'The call for COMPLEX Leaders':
There is general consensus that a ‘a day in the life of’ tomorrow’s leaders will be significantly different from today. On the one hand the broad future trends such as globalisation, virtualisation, digitisation and automation of organisations are literally transforming the nature of jobs. At the same time, a progressively diverse workforce is also adding challenges, and benefits, to the leadership task of effectively integrating and spearheading teams that are multi-generational, increasingly educated up to tertiary level, and likely working off-site.
No one would have guessed that some of the 'broad future trends' would literally steamroller its way through the beginning of 2020, and force organisations to basically go virtual overnight. Leaders now have no choice but to step up to the challenge of being adaptable and resilient, ready to face the challenges ahead and doing so whilst empowering their people and doing the right thing.
COMPETENT; INNOVATIVE; MATURE; EMPATHETIC; ETHICAL; CONNECTED; FLEXIBLE.
True complex leaders are by no means perfect and without fault. Somewhat similar to the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with powdered gold lacquer – Kintsugi – complex leaders embrace their fault lines and continuously work at repairing it. The reality is also that no one has chartered these waters that we are on before.
At JVR we are passionate about making a difference to people and we want to do our bit to support organisations and their people through this crisis. We know that right now leaders are inundated with pieces of information across all electronic platforms and may feel overwhelmed and confused by the amount of data they must process. Through engagements with many of our clients over the past weeks, it is clear that many leaders now need a personal connection – someone they can share their thought space with and someone who can offer perspective in the form of questions.
It has never been more important for organisations to anchor and support their leaders than it is right now.
